Description: Global Administrative Boundaries and Population is a global dataset of political-administrative boundaries compiled, enriched, and maintained by imbGIS, a team of GIS professionals serving the International Mission Board. The data includes five layers:admin0 (country)admin 1 (region / department / state / province / prefecture)admin2 (municipality / county / district / subprefecture)admin3 (subdistrict / ward / submunicipality / commune)admin4 (village / settlement)Each layer of administrative boundaries includes place name along with detailed boundary, source, license, and citation data along with appropriate ISO codes. Administrative boundaries are enhanced with attribute data that includes age-gender demographics for 2020, and summary demographics for 2000-2019 at all levels. The layers are made available under an open CC-BY 4.0 license. Global Administrative Boundaries and Population data originates with individual country vector data from GeoBoundaries. GeoBoundary data is supported by the community and by William & Mary geoLab. The data seeks to represent each country "as they would represent themselves." Data for each country is processed to identify intersection between each parent/child layer and retain parent codes for each layer. Where GeoBoundaries does not include admin4 data, Voronoi polygons are created from populated place data (GeoNames, Karma Shapes, or OpenStreetMap). Voronoi polygons are convex polygons created to uniquely represent each point in the corresponding populated place data set. Source, citation, and license fields identify the populated place data source for each of the 4.7 million records in admin4. After the boundary data is compiled into a global service, demographics for all layers are extracted from the latest gridded population estimate datasets in the WorldPop Open Population Repository (unconstrained global mosaics 2000-2020 at 1km resolution).Global Administrative Boundaries and Population is a human geography dataset that supports IMB's End of the Earth (EoE) initiative. End of the Earth is a phrase from Jesus' commission in Acts 1:8. 'But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth" (ESV). IMB is an Evangelical mission sending agency that supports thousands of missionary teams who are making disciples and planting churches among People Groups around the world. We take the gospel of Jesus to people in hard-to-reach places!Global Administrative Boundaries and Population aims to provide earth's most comprehensive, open license (CC BY 4.0), global administrative boundaries data set.
